Inventory control in supply chains: Alternative approaches to a two-stage lot-sizing problem
نویسندگان
چکیده
The principal challenge of inventory control in supply chains is that the interacting autonomous enterprises have to plan their production and logistics under information asymmetry, driven by different, often conflicting objectives. In this paper, four different computational approaches are investigated to cope with this challenge: decomposition, integration, coordination, and bilevel programming. The four approaches are applied to solving the same two-stage economic lot-sizing problem, and compared in computational experiments. The prerequisites of the approaches are analyzed, and it is shown that the profits realized and the costs incurred at the different parties largely depend on the solution approach applied. This research also resulted in a novel coordination mechanism, as well as a new algorithm for the bilevel optimization approach to the investigated lotsizing problem. A specific goal of this study is to highlight the so far less recognized application potential of the coordination and the bilevel optimization approaches for controlling inventories in a supply chain. & 2012 Elsevier B.V. Simultaneous Lot Sizing and Scheduling in a Flexible Flow Line
This paper breaks new ground by modelling lot sizing and scheduling in a flexible flow line (FFL) simultaneously instead of separately. This problem, called the ‘General Lot sizing and Scheduling Problem in a Flexible Flow Line’ (GLSP-FFL), optimizes the lot sizing and scheduling of multiple products at multiple stages, each stage having multiple machines in parallel. The objective is to satisf...
متن کاملModeling and Analyzing Incremental Quantity Discounts in Transportation Costs for a Joint Economic Lot Sizing Problem
Joint economic lot sizing (JELS) addresses integrated inventory models in a supply chain. Most of the studies in this field either do not consider the role of the transportation cost in their analysis or consider transportation cost as a fixed part of the ordering costs. In this article, a model is developed to analyze an incremental quantity discount in transportation cost. Appropriate equatio...
متن کاملOPTIMIZATION OF A PRODUCTION LOT SIZING PROBLEM WITH QUANTITY DISCOUNT
Dynamic lot sizing problem is one of the significant problem in industrial units and it has been considered by many researchers. Considering the quantity discount in purchasing cost is one of the important and practical assumptions in the field of inventory control models and it has been less focused in terms of stochastic version of dynamic lot sizing problem. In this paper, stochastic dyn...
متن کاملSimultaneous Due Date Assignment and Lot Sizing with Uncertain Flow Times
Due date assignment for customer orders has been studied in various productionenvironments using different modeling approaches. In this paper the researchers consider aproduction system in which the orders of several customers are produced in a single batch because ofthe economy of scale. If a batch is completed before receiving customer orders, inventory carryingcost is incurred but if it is c...
متن کاملApproaches to Inventory Management in Supply Chains: a Comparative Study
In this study we present and compare four different approaches to inventory management in supply chains: the decomposition approach, where each company optimizes its own production and inventories without considering how this affects its partners’ situation; the integrated approach, which assumes complete trust between the partners who minimize the total production and logistic cost throughout ...
